Overview
The three and a half hour tour begins with a visit to Zanzibar’s colourful market. Alive with the buzz of locals bartering over fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruits, amongst the heady smell of Jackfruit and many other exotic fruits.
NOTE: 2 half day Zanzibar excursions may be combined to make a full day.
We will continue to the site of the cathedral built in 1874. The cathedral signifies a potent time of Zanzibar’s historyand stands on the site of a past slave market, its altar standing on the exact position of the whipping post. Slavery was abolished in 1873 through a decree passed by the then Sultan of Zanzibar.
From here we visit the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, ‘Tipu Tip House’, the Old Fort, ‘Peoples Palace’ and the ‘House of Wonders’, full of intrigue and a vivid history of a bygone era. The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of old Stone Town, the heart of Zanzibar’s vivacious history where there is time for shopping.
